The tan brick and stone Neo-Classical and Beaux Arts facility was erected on a hill in 1905.  The courthouse is at the intersection of Main and Burkitt streets.  Link and McAllister were the architects.  United States Highway 87 Business passes in front of the courthouse.  The building was enlarged in 1982 and restored in 1984.  The facility features a dome.  A Justice Center has been added to the courthouse.  The county was formed on March 9, 1888 from Johnson County as the 11th county and Sheridan has always been the county seat.  The county and county seat were named for Civil War General Phillip H. Sheridan. 

Sheridan County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Commissioners.  Two District Court Judges and Two Circuit Court Judges serve Sheridan and Johnson counties.  The county is on the northern border with Montana.  Casper, Wyoming is south and Billings, Montana is northwest of the county.  The county center is in Sheridan .8 miles Southeast of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Montana and Campbell, Johnson, and Big Horn counties. 

The area of the county is 2523 square miles.  It is 17 out of 23 in the state.  It ranks 7 out of 23 in population in the state.  It has a density of 12.3 persons per square mile making it 3 out of 23 in the state.  Sheridan County has 67.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 90 passes north to south in the county from Montana to Johnson County.  United States Highway 14 enters from Campbell County, east, and exits to Big Horn County, west.  United States Highway 14 Alternate originates and goes west into Big Horn County.  United States Highway 16 is joined with United States Highway 14 from Campbell County, splits and goes south into Johnson County.  United States Highway 87 is joined with Interstate Highway 90 from Montana to Johnson County.  The county is shaped like a knife blade.  The City of Sheridan is located near the center of the county.  Sheridan is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 60.6% of the county population.  This county is in the Sheridan Micropolitan Statistical Area.
