The red brick Modern courthouse was completed in 1984. It is on Tyler Avenue between Pine and Mill streets. Pine Street is United States Highway 191 in this part of the town. Dolence and Frullo are the architects. A metal roof is on top of the building. There was a 1931 courthouse previously in Pinedale, the only county seat. A Justice Center is connected to the courthouse. The county was established on February 15, 1921 from Fremont and Lincoln counties as the 22nd county. It is named for fur trapper William L. Sublette. Pinedale was named for Pine Creek.
Sublette County government consists of a sheriff and 3 Commissioners. Three District Court Judges and Four Circuit Court Judges serve Sublette, Fremont, and Teton counties. Sublette County is situated in the western part of the state. Casper, Wyoming is east and Cheyenne, Wyoming is southeast of the county. The Continental Divide is the eastern border of the county. The county center is 8.1 miles South of Pinedale. The county is surrounded clockwise by Fremont, Sweetwater, Lincoln, and Teton counties.
The area of the county is 4882 square miles. It is 6 out of 23 in the state. It ranks 16 out of 23 in population in the state. It has a density of 1.8 persons per square mile making it 22 out of 23 in the state. Sublette County has 37.3% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 189 enters the county from the northwest, Lincoln County, and exits back to the southwest, Lincoln County. United States Highway 191 is joined with United States Highway 189 from Lincoln County, northwest, splits and continues south into Sweetwater County. The county resembles a fat boot. Pinedale is located near the center of the county. Pinedale is the county seat and the largest city. It is 23.0% of the county population.
