The Modern tan brick and concrete facility was erected in 1967. There was an 1876 version previously. It is on Flaming Gorge Way, North 1st Street West, Center Street and North 2nd Street West. Flaming Gorge Way is United States Highway 30 Business through the town. Kellogg & Kellogg designed the facility. A pioneer memorial is on the grounds. A library was remodeled in 1985 to house a Circuit Courthouse to augment the county courthouse. A Justice Center in Rock Springs was planned for 2018. Sweetwater County was founded on December 17, 1867 as the 2nd county. Green River has always been the county seat. The county is named for the Sweetwater River. The county seat is named for the river.
Sweetwater County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Commissioners. Two District Court Judges and Three Circuit Court Judges serve Sweetwater, Lincoln, and Uinta counties. The county straddles the southern border with both Utah and Colorado. Casper, Wyoming is northeast and Cheyenne, Wyoming is east of the county. The Continental Divide goes through the county. The county center is 26.7 miles Northeast of Green River nearer Winton. The county is surrounded clockwise by Fremont and Carbon counties and Colorado and Utah and Uinta, Lincoln, and Sublette counties.

United States Highway 191 comes from Sublette County, northwest, and goes to Utah, southwest. The county resembles a fat small letter r. Green River is located in the southwest quarter of the county. Rock Springs is east of Green River. Green River is the county seat and Rock Springs is the largest city. Green River is 28.0% of the county population while Rock Springs is 55.7% of the county population. This county is in the Rock Springs Micropolitan Statistical Area.
