The 1905 courthouse is built of light tan brick and concrete. It is located on North Court Street between 4th and 5th streets. Fourth Street is Alabama State Highway 206. Bruce Architectural Company provided the Romanesque designs. The building was enlarged in 2007. An Administrative Center was added in 2009. The facility features a tower with a working clock. The grounds have veteran memorials. Jackson Mill’s, Washington, and Kinston were all county seats before Prattville. Prattville had an earlier courthouse built in 1870. Autauga County was founded on November 22, 1818 as the 22nd county. Atagi, a Native American village, was the source for the county’s name. Prattville was named for Daniel Pratt, a cotton gin manufacturer. Autauga County was formed from Montgomery County and later provided land for Elmore County.
Autauga County government consists of a sheriff, revenue commissioner, and coroner (executive). It has 5 commissioners (legislative.) Three Circuit Judges serve Autauga, Chilton, and Elmore counties and a District Judge, a Probate Judge, a District Attorney, and a County Clerk serve Autauga County (judicial.) The county is situated in central Alabama just northwest of Montgomery, Alabama. The center of the county is 9.2 miles Northwest of Prattville nearer Booth. The county is clockwise surrounded by Chilton, Elmore, Montgomery, Lowndes, and Dallas counties. Prattville is in the southeast quarter of the county and extends into Elmore County. It is the largest city and the county seat. Prattville has 64% of the county’s population. The county is pronounced A-TA-GA. The county seat is pronounced PRAT-VIL.
The county has an area of 594.4 square miles. It ranks 55 out of 67 in area in the state. It ranks 22 out of 67 in population in the state. It has a density of 100.5 persons per square mile making it 20 out of 67 in the state. Autauga County has 63.2% of its population in its incorporated areas. The Alabama River forms its southern border. Interstate Highway 65 crosses the eastern part of the county coming from the north, Chilton County, and exiting to the southeast, Elmore County. United States Highway 31 basically follows Interstate Highway 65 coming in from Chilton County on the north but leaving southward into Montgomery County. United States Highway 82 also enters from Chilton County in the north and exiting to the southeast into Elmore County. The county is overall shaped like a fat capital J. The county is in the Montgomery Metropolitan Statistical Area.
