A classic courthouse was replaced in 2006 by this new building. It sits on Court near Jackson Street. United States Highways 31/84 are 2 blocks to the east of the site. The 1896 classic courthouse was also in Evergreen. 2WR, Holmes and Wilkes Architect are the architects of this tan brick and concrete Modern style courthouse. The facility has a working clock, columns and a metal roof. Conecuh is Native American for “land of cane.” The county seat is named for nearby trees. The county has had Hampton Ridge, Sparta and Evergreen as county seats. The county was formed on February 13, 1818 from Monroe County as the 19th county.

A Circuit Judge serves Conecuh and Monroe counties and a District Judge, a Probate Judge, a District Attorney, and a County Clerk serve Conecuh County (judicial.) The county is in southwest Alabama. The center of the county is in Evergreen 3.5 miles Southwest of city center. The county is surrounded clockwise by Butler, Covington, Escambia, and Monroe counties. Evergreen is near the center of the county. Evergreen is the county seat and the largest city. It is 30.3% of the county population. Mobile, Alabama is southwest and Montgomery, Alabama is northeast of the county. The county is pronounced KO-NAE-KU.
The county has an area of 850.2 square miles. It ranks 19 out of 67 in size. It ranks 61 out of 67 in population in the state. It has a density of 13.2 persons per square mile making it 63 out of 67 in the state. Conecuh County has 36.7% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 65 crosses from Butler County, northeast, into Escambia County, southwest. United States Highway 31 parallels Interstate Highway 65 across the county from Butler County to Escambia County. United States Highway 84 goes from east to west, Covington County to Monroe County. The county is shaped like a fat cone with an added leg on the southeast.
