The facility is a masonry structure located at Bellville and Court streets.  United States Highway 31 is two blocks south of the site.  The pillared building was built in 1960.  Charles H. McCauley is the architect of this Modern style courthouse.  The grounds have veteran memorials and a canon.  There was a 1901 courthouse in Brewton.  Pollard and Brewton have been the county seats.  Escambia County is named for the river which is Native American for “trade” or “clear water.”  Railroad officer, William Troupe Brewton, is the namesake for the county seat.  The county was created on December 10, 1866 from parts of Baldwin and Conecuh counties as the 62nd county. 

Escambia County government consists of a sheriff, revenue commissioner, and coroner (executive).  It has 5 commissioners (legislative.)  Two Circuit Judges, and a District Judge, a Probate Judge, a District Attorney, and a County Clerk serve Elmore County (judicial.)  The county is in the southwest part of Alabama with Florida on its south border.  Mobile, Alabama is southwest of the county and Pensacola, Florida is directly south.  The center of the county is 13.4 miles West of Brewton nearer Flomaton.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Conecuh and Covington counties and Florida and Baldwin, and Monroe counties.  Brewton is slightly east of center.  Atmore is in the southwest quarter of the county. 

The county has an area of 945.1 square miles.  It ranks 12 out of 67 in size.  It ranks 33 out of 67 in population in the state.  It has a density of 38.8 persons per square mile making it 38 out of 67 in the state.  Escambia County has 54.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 65 crosses from north to southwest, Conecuh County to Baldwin County.  United States Highway 29 comes in from the east, Covington County, and goes south into Florida.  United States Highway 31 basically follows Interstate Highway 65 from Conecuh County into Baldwin County.  The county is overall a flat rectangle with the exceptions of following rivers along the northwest and northeast borders.  Brewton is the county seat and Atmore is the largest city.  Brewton is 14.3% of the county population and Atmore is 22.8% of the county population.  The county is pronounced E-SKAM-BEE-A.
