The pillars stand out in this 1964 concrete and tan brick structure. Prior to this courthouse, there was a 1900 courthouse in Geneva. The current building is at Commerce and Fleming streets. Alabama State Highway 27 is one block north of the site. Sherlock, Smith and Adams designed this Modern style courthouse. The facility has a metal roof and the grounds have veteran memorials and a static helicopter. Geneva, New York gave the county and county seat their names. Coffee, Dale, and Henry counties were the source of Geneva County on December 26, 1868 as the 63rd county. Geneva has always been the county seat.
Geneva County government consists of a sheriff, revenue commissioner, and coroner (executive). It has 5 commissioners (legislative.) Two Circuit Judges serve Geneva and Dale counties and a District Judge, a Probate Judge, a District Attorney, and a County Clerk serve Geneva County (judicial.) The county is in far south Alabama on the border with Florida. The center of the county is 6.8 miles Northeast of Geneva nearer Hartford. The county is surrounded clockwise by Dale and Houston counties and Florida and Covington and Coffee counties. The Choctawhatchee River crosses through the center of the county. Geneva is the county seat and the largest city. It is 15.9% of the county population.
The county has an area of 574.4 square miles. It ranks 60 out of 67 in size. It ranks 39 out of 67 in population in the state. It has a density of 46.6 persons per square mile making it 35 out of 67 in the state. Geneva County has 48.0% of its population in its incorporated areas. There are no Interstate highways or United States highways passing through the county. The county is a flat rectangle. Geneva is in the far south near the Florida border. The county is in the Dothan Metropolitan Statistical Area.
