The working clock tower on this tan brick courthouse which is located on Main Street between Whelan and Centreville streets. It is situated on Alabama State Highway 25 (Main Street.) It was built in 1907 using the Neo-Classical Revival designs of John A. Straiton. Veteran memorials adorn the grounds. Greensboro was named for Greene County. The county was named for Colonel Stephen F. Hale. Hale County was the birthplace for 1 Alabama Governor, Thomas Seay. The county was formed on January 30, 1867 from parts of Greene, Marengo, Perry, and Tuscaloosa counties as the 60th county. Greensboro has been the only county seat.
Hale County government consists of a sheriff, revenue commissioner, and coroner (executive). It has 5 commissioners (legislative.) Three Circuit Judges serve Hale, Bibb, Dallas, Perry and Wilcox counties and a District Judge, a Probate Judge, a District Attorney, and a County Clerk serve Hale County (judicial.) The county is in the west central part of the state just south of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The center of the county is 6.5 miles North-Northwest of Greensboro. The county is surrounded clockwise by Tuscaloosa, Bibb, Perry, Marengo, and Greene counties. The Black Warrior River is its western border. Greensboro is the county seat and the largest city. It is 15.0% of the county population.
The county has an area of 943.9 square miles. It ranks 13 out of 67 in size. It ranks 55 out of 67 in population in the state. It has a density of 15.5 persons per square mile making it 59 out of 67 in the state. Hale County has 29.5% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 80 comes into and out of the county on the south border with Marengo County. The county is overall rectangular with the wandering west border from the river and three steps on the east border. Greensboro is in the southeast quarter of the county. The county is in the Tuscaloosa Metropolitan Statistical Area.
