The county courthouse for Marengo County is located at the corner of Coats and Main.  This courthouse was built in 1966.  Main Street is United States Highway 43 in the town.  Sherlock, Smith, and Adams were the architects of this Modern style courthouse.  There were 1850 and 1902 versions of the courthouse.  The current building features columns and the grounds have veteran memorials.  A 2006 County Office building sits beside the courthouse.  The county was named for the Napoleon battle site in Europe.  The county seat’s name originates from the French battle site of Hohenlinden.  Linden and Demopolis have both served as the county seat.  The Choctaw Lands provided the land for Marengo County on February 6, 1818 as the 13th county. 

Madison County government consists of a sheriff, revenue commissioner, and coroner (executive).  It has 7 commissioners (legislative.)  Five Circuit Judges, Three District Judges, a Probate Judge, a District Attorney, and a County Clerk serve Madison County (judicial.)  The county is located in far north central Alabama north of Birmingham, Alabama on the border with Tennessee.  The Tennessee River forms its southern border.  The center of the county is in Huntsville .2 miles Northwest of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Tennessee and Jackson, Marshall, Morgan, and Limestone counties.  The county is overall rectangular with the wandering river on the south.  Huntsville is in the west extending into Limestone County. 

The county has an area of 976.9 square miles.  It ranks 11 out of 67 in size.  It ranks 47 out of 67 in population in the state.  It has a density of 19.2 persons per square mile making it 54 out of 67 in the state.  Marengo County has 51.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 43 enters from Greene County, north, and goes into Clarke County, south.  United States Highway 80 crosses the extreme top of the county coming in and out of Perry County and finally exiting west into Sumter County.  The county’s overall shape is a fat backward C.  Linden is in the north center of the county.  Demopolis is on the northern border of the county.  The county is pronounced MUH-REN-GOE.  The largest city is pronounced DE-MOP-OE-LIS.
