A concrete and masonry building is the courthouse.  Located on Lawrence Street between Washington and Adams streets, the structure was built in 1958.  Alabama State Highway 108 is three blocks to the north.  The architect is Pearson Title and Narrow in a Modern style.  A Judicial Center was added in 1986.  A statue of Major Montgomery sits in front of the structure.  A classic 1854 courthouse was also in Montgomery.  General Lemuel Montgomery is the source for county’s name.  The county seat is reported to be named for General Richard Montgomery.  Montgomery County was the birthplace of 3 Alabama Governors, D. Bibb Graves, S. Gordon Persons, and James E. Folsom, Jr.  Montgomery has been the only county seat.  The county was created on December 6, 1816 from Monroe County as the 7th county.  The Alabama state capitol is in this county. 

Montgomery County government consists of a sheriff, revenue commissioner, and coroner (executive).  It has 5 commissioners (legislative.)  Ten Circuit Judges, Three District Judges, and a Probate Judge, a District Attorney, and a County Clerk serve Montgomery County (judicial.)  The county is situated in central Alabama.  The Tallapoosa River forms its northern border.  The center of the county is in Montgomery 4.4 miles Southeast of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Elmore, Macon, Bullock, Pike, Crenshaw, Lowndes, and Autauga counties.  The county is shaped like a bag of popcorn with Montgomery in the far northwest corner.  Montgomery is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 87.6% of the county population.  

The county has an area of 784.3 square miles.  It ranks 23 out of 67 in size.  It ranks 7 out of 67 in population in the state.  It has a density of 288.6 persons per square mile making it 6 out of 67 in the state.  Montgomery County has 91.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 65 crosses the county north to south from a tip of Elmore County into Lowndes County.  Interstate Highway 85 comes in from the east, Macon County, and terminates in the Montgomery.  United States Highway 31 enters from Autauga County, northwest, and goes into Lowndes Count, southwest, basically paralleling Interstate Highway 65.  United States Highway 80 crosses east to west from Macon County into Lowndes County.  United States Highway 82 comes in from Bullock County in the east and exits into Autauga County in the west.  United States Highway 231 crosses north to south Elmore County to Pike County.  United States Highway 331 originates in the county and travels south into Crenshaw County.  The county is in the Montgomery Metropolitan Statistical Area.
