A modern concrete and red brick courthouse serves Pike County.  It was built in 1952 but remodeled to its current appearance.  It is sited on Church Street between Oak and Love streets.  United States Highway 29 is one block east.  This Modern style courthouse was designed by Hinch, Lersead & Crump.  The structure has a working clock and veteran memorials are on the grounds.  There was an 1881 courthouse also in Troy.  Louisville and Monticello have also served as county seat.  General Zebulon Pike provided the county’s name.  Pike County was the birthplace for 2 Alabama Governors, William C. Oates and Charles Henderson.  It was formed on December 17, 1821 from Henry and Montgomery counties as the 32nd county.  The county seat is named for North Carolina Attorney General, Alexander Troy. 

Pike County government consists of a sheriff, revenue commissioner, and coroner (executive).  It has 6 commissioners (legislative.)  Three Circuit Judges serve Pike and Coffee counties and a District Judge, a Probate Judge, a District Attorney, and a County Clerk serve Pike County (judicial.)  The county is in southeast Alabama southeast of Montgomery, Alabama.  The center of the county is in Troy 2.7 miles Southeast of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Bullock, Barbour, Dale, Coffee, Crenshaw, and Montgomery counties.  A stove with a chimney describes the county shape.  Troy is west of center in the county. 

The Pea River is the eastern border for the county.  The county has an area of 672.1 square miles.  It ranks 35 out of 67 in size.  It ranks 36 out of 67 in population in the state.  It has a density of 49.1 persons per square mile making it 32 out of 67 in the state.  Pike County has 61.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 29 crosses the county from northeast to southwest entering from Bullock County and exiting into Crenshaw County.  United States Highway 231 basically goes north to south in the county, Montgomery County to Coffee County.  Troy is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 53.7% of the county population.  The county is in the Troy Micropolitan Statistical Area.
