The beautiful Classical Revival courthouse was built in 1861.  It is located at 6th and Jay streets.  California State Highway 20 is one block north of the location.  Vincent Brown was the designer for this courthouse.  Monroeville (1851) and Colusa (1850 & 1854) have been county seats.  The building was enlarged in 1886, renovated in 2002 and restored in 2005.  A Hall of Records was added in 1914 and an annex was added in 1992.  Colusa was created on February 18, 1850 as the 3rd county.  The county was an original county.  The county and county seat were named for a Native American village. 

Colusa County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, controller, and treasurer (executive).  It has 5 Supervisors (legislative.)  Two Superior Court Judges, clerk, and counsel serve Colusa County (judicial.)  The county is northwest of Sacramento, California in northern California.  The Sacramento River is the eastern border of the county.  The county center is 20.1 miles Southwest of Colusa nearer Williams.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Glenn, Butte, Sutter, Yolo, and Lake counties.  The county is rectangle tilting west and having wavy west and east borders.  Colusa on the far east side on the river.  Colusa is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 29.3% of the county population.  The county and county seat are pronounced COE-LUE-SA.

The area of the county is 1151 square miles.  It is 39 out of 58 in the state.  It ranks 50 out of 58 in population in the state.  It has a density of 19.0 persons per square mile making it 48 out of 58 in the state.  Colusa County has 54.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate 5 comes from the north (Glenn County) and goes to the south (Yolo County).
