A governmental structure built in 1950 the county courthouse is located on a square at State, Perkins, School, and Standley streets.  United States Highway 101 is six blocks to the east of the building.  C. A. Caulkins, Jr., was the designer of this Modern and Art Deco style courthouse.  An Annex supplements the Ukiah Courthouse and an auxiliary courthouse is located in Fort Bragg.  A new courthouse is planned in 2017.  An 1873 courthouse was also in Ukiah since Ukiah has been the only court seat.  Mendocino County was formed on February 18, 1850 as an original county.  It is the 9th county.  The county was named after Mexican Viceroy Mendoza.  Ukiah is Native American for “Deep Valley.” 

Mendocino County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, controller, and treasurer (executive).  It has 5 Supervisors (legislative.)  Seven Superior Court Judges, clerk, and counsel serve Mendocino County (judicial.)  Mendocino County is on the northwest coast of the state.  The Pacific Ocean forms the western boundary.  San Francisco, California is south of the county.  The county center is 48.8 miles North-Northwest of Ukiah nearer Longvale.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Trinity, Tehama, Glenn, Lake, and Sonoma counties and the Pacific Ocean and Humboldt County.  A backward C is the overall shape of the county.  Ukiah is in the southeast part of the county.  Ukiah is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 18.2% of the county population.  The county is pronounced MEN-DO-CEE-NOE.  The county seat is pronounced UE-KIE-AH.  

The area of the county is 3509 square miles.  It is 15 out of 58 in the state.  It ranks 38 out of 58 in population in the state.  It has a density of 26.1 persons per square mile making it 44 out of 58 in the state.  Mendocino County has 31.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 101 enters from Humboldt County on the north and exits into Sonoma County on the south.  This county is in the Ukiah Micropolitan Statistical Area.
