The Victorian style structure was built in 1880.  It is located at School and Main streets.  Main Street is United States Highway 395.  J. R. Roberts designed the courthouse.  It is the only courthouse located in Bridgeport with Bridgeport being the only county seat.  An Administrative building was added in 1973.  Mono County was formed on March 1, 1861 from parts of Calaveras, Fresno, and Mariposa counties as the 44th county.  Mono comes from the Native American Mono Paiute tribe.  The county seat is presumably named for Bridgeport, Connecticut. 

The area of the county is 3044 square miles.  It is 20 out of 58 in the state.  It ranks 55 out of 58 in population in the state.  It has a density of 4.3 persons per square mile making it 54 out of 58 in the state.  Mono County has 54.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 395 enters from the northeast, Nevada, and goes to the southeast, Inyo County.  The county is shaped like a fat bowl tilting toward the northeast. 

Mono County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, controller, and treasurer (executive).  It has 5 Supervisors (legislative.)  Two Superior Court Judges, clerk, and counsel serve Mono County (judicial.)  The eastern border is Nevada.  United States Highway 6 crosses the extreme southeast part of the county from Nevada, east, to Inyo County, southeast.  Bridgeport is in the northwest part of the county.  Mammoth Lakes is in the extreme southwest corner of the county.  Bridgeport is the county seat but unincorporated.  Mammoth Lakes is the largest city since it is the only incorporated city in the county.  Bridgeport is 4.2% of the county population while Mammoth Lakes is 54.6% of the county population.  Mono County is southeast of Reno, Nevada.  The county center is 41.4 miles Southeast of Bridgeport nearer June Lake.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Nevada and Inyo, Fresno, Madera, Tuolumne, and Alpine counties.  The county is pronounced MOE-NOE.
