The Modern style masonry courthouse of Napa County was built in 1996. It was designed by Ross & Drulis Architects. There was an 1878 courthouse located in Napa, the only county seat. A Hall of Records (1915) and Administration Building (1978) augment the courthouse. The courthouse is sited on Brown and 3rd streets. California State Highway 29 is 12 blocks to the west. Napa County was created on February 18, 1850 as an original county. It was the 11th county. The county and city’s names came from the Native American Napan tribe.
