The Art Deco style courthouse structure is official appearing but could be at home on a college campus as well. It was erected in 1937 using the designs of George C. Sellon. There was an 1865 courthouse also in Nevada City, the only county seat. An annex was added in 1964 and an Administration Building in 1986. On April 25, 1851, Nevada County became a county from Yuba County as the 28th county. The building is located on Church Street at Pine Street. California State Highway 20 is two blocks east of the site.
Nevada County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, controller, and treasurer (executive). It has 5 Supervisors (legislative.) Six Superior Court Judges, clerk, and counsel serve Nevada County (judicial.) The county is situated in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The county and county seat’s names come from the mountains. Sacramento, California is southwest and Reno, Nevada is east. The county center is 32.6 miles Northeast of Nevada City nearer Washington. The county is surrounded clockwise by Sierra County and Nevada and Placer and Yuba counties. The county looks like a golf club with the head pointing to the southwest. A fork of the American River is the southern border and the Truckee River goes east out of the county. Nevada City is in the western quarter of the county. Truckee is located in the far eastern part of the county. Nevada City is the county seat and Truckee is the largest city. Nevada City is 3.1% of the county population while Truckee is 33.1% of the county population.
The area of the county is 958 square miles. It is 44 out of 58 in the state. It ranks 36 out of 58 in population in the state. It has a density of 106.7 persons per square mile making it 32 out of 58 in the state. Nevada County has 33.1% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 80 comes from the northeast, Sierra County, and goes to the southwest, Placer County. This county is in the Truckee-Grass Valley Micropolitan Statistical Area.
