The Modern style building is the Orange County courthouse.  The building was built in 1969 using the designs of Richard A. Neutra and Ramberg & Lowrey.  A stately 1901 courthouse preceded the current structure in Santa Ana, the only county seat.  August 1, 1889 Orange County was established from Los Angeles County as the 53rd county.  It sits at the corner of Civic Center Drive and North Parton Street.  The county gets its name for the orange trees brought to this location from Mexico.  The Pueblo Santiago de Santa Ana provided the county seat name. 

Orange County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, controller, and treasurer (executive).  It has 5 Supervisors (legislative.)  One hundred eight Superior Court Judges, clerk, and counsel serve Alameda County (judicial.)  The county is just southeast of Los Angeles, California in southern California.  The county center is in Santa Ana 1.3 miles South-Southeast of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by San Bernardino, Riverside, and San Diego counties and the Pacific Ocean and Los Angeles County.  Interstate Highway 5 crosses north to south from Los Angeles County to San Diego County.  Numerous Interstate Highway loops and connections are also in the county.  Richard M. Nixon, the 37th President, was born and is buried in this county.  The county is overall rectangular shaped turned to a 45-degree angle.  Santa Ana is in the northwest quarter of the county.  Anaheim is further to the northwest in the county.  Santa Ana is the county seat and Anaheim is the largest city.  Santa Ana is 9.7% of the county population while Anaheim is 10.9% of the county population.  

The area of the county is 948 square miles.  It is 46 out of 58 in the state.  It ranks 3 out of 58 in population in the state.  It has a density of 3361.8 persons per square mile making it 2 out of 58 in the state.  Orange County has 95.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  The Pacific Ocean is the county’s western border.  This county is in the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana Metropolitan Statistical Area.
