The Modern style building housing the Sacramento County courthouse was built in 1965.  Starks, Jozens, and Natch were the designers.  Earlier courthouses have been in Sacramento in 1852 and 1910, the only county seat.  Sacramento is an original county founded on February 18, 1850.  It is the 12th county.  The building is located in downtown on a square surrounded by G, 8th, H, and 9th streets.  Interstate Highway 5 passes 5 blocks west of the site.  An Administration building was added in 1977 and a Criminal Courthouse was added in 1989.  The Spanish explorer Gabriel Moraga named the Sacramento River after the Spanish word for “Holy Sacrament.”  The county and city were then named after the river.  Sacramento County was the birthplace of 1 California Governor, Hiram W. Johnson.  The California state capitol is located in this county. 

Sacramento County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, controller, and treasurer (executive).  It has 5 Supervisors (legislative.)  Sixty-three Superior Court Judges, clerk, and counsel serve Sacramento County (judicial.)  The county is located in north central California to the northeast of San Francisco, California.  The county center is in Sacramento 6.9 miles East-Southeast of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Placer, El Dorado, Amador, San Joaquin, Contra Costa, Solano, Yolo, and Sutter counties.  The county is overall rectangular with the Mokelumne River on the southern border and the Sacramento River on the west.  Sacramento City is a sprawling city taking up the majority of the northwest quarter of the county.  Sacramento is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 33.1% of the county population.  The county and county seat are pronounced SAK-RA-MEN-TOE.  

The area of the county is 966 square miles.  It is 43 out of 58 in the state.  It ranks 8 out of 58 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1640.8 persons per square mile making it 6 out of 58 in the state.  Sacramento County has 61.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 5 enters from Yolo County in the northwest and exits south into San Joaquin County.  Interstate Highway 80 comes from Placer County, northeast, and goes into Yolo County, west.  United States Highway 50 enters from the east, El Dorado County, and terminates in the county.  The Sacramento River forms its western border.  The American River enters the county to join the Sacramento River.  The Consumes River crosses the southern part of the county.  This county is in the Sacramento-Arden Arcade-Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area.
