The structure could very well be a state capitol.  Erected in 1916 in Beaux Arts style, the designers were John Bakewell and Arthur Brown, Jr.  There was an 1890 version for the city/county as San Francisco is the only county seat.  San Francisco County was created on April 15, 1850 as the 27th county.  The county/city are named for the Mission San Francisco de Asis.  San Francisco County was the birthplace of 5 California Governors, George C. Pardee, James Rolph, Jr., Edmund G. Brown, Sr., Edmund G. Brown, Jr., and Gavin C. Newsom.  The courthouse is sited on a square surrounded by Van Ness Avenue, McAllister, Polk, and Grove streets.  Van Ness Avenue is United States Highway 101 in this part of the city. 

San Francisco County government consists of a sheriff, mayor, assessor, controller, and treasurer (executive).  It has 5 Supervisors (legislative.)  Fifty Superior Court Judges, clerk, and counsel serve San Francisco County (judicial.)  The county is located in western California.  The Pacific Ocean is its western and northwestern borders and the San Francisco Bay is its eastern and northeastern borders.  San Jose, California is southeast and Oakland, California is directly east of the county.  The county center is in San Francisco 1.6 miles Southwest of the city center.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Marin, Contra Costa, Alameda, and San Mateo counties and the Pacific Ocean.  The county is shaped like a deep bowl turned over.  The county is a city/county with the City of San Francisco and the County of San Francisco being a single entity.  San Francisco is 100.0% of the county population.  The county and county seat are pronounced SAN FRAN-SIS-KOE. 

The area of the county is 47 square miles.  It is 58 out of 58 in the state.  It ranks 12 out of 58 in population in the state.  It has a density of 18594.9 persons per square mile making it 1 out of 58 in the state.  San Francisco County has 100.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 80 crosses the San Francisco Bay from Alameda County to the east and terminates in the county.  United States Highway 101 enters from Marin County to the north and exits into San Mateo County to the south.  Other Interstate Loops are in the county.  This county is in the San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont Metropolitan Statistical Area.
