A Modern style building appearance is the description of the 1961 courthouse. Stockton was home for the 1890 courthouse also, as Stockton has been the only county seat. Mayo, Johnson, DeWolf, Clawsley, and Whipple were the courthouse designers. A new courthouse was under construction in 2016. An Administrative Center was added in 2009. Following California statehood San Joaquin County was created on February 18, 1850 as an original county. It is the 14th county. The county was named for the San Joaquin River. The courthouse is located on East Weber Avenue between Hunter and San Joaquin streets. California State Highway 4 is three blocks south of the site. Stockton was named for Commodore Robert F. Stockton.

Stockton is near to the center in the county. Stockton is the county seat and the largest city. It is 41.2% of the county population. The county is pronounced SAN WA-KEEN.

It has a density of 557.0 persons per square mile making it 11 out of 58 in the state. San Joaquin County has 79.1% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 5 crosses north to south, Sacramento County to Stanislaus County. This county is in the Stockton Metropolitan Statistical Area.
