The Modern style structure was built in 1956.  Marian V. Allen was the architect.  There was an 1889 courthouse in Redding and an 1850 facility in Shasta.  An annex was added in 1965 and the courthouse was renovated in 1996.  An Administration building was added in 2002.  Shasta County was an original county dating from February 18, 1850.  It was the 19th county.  The county name comes from Mount Shasta which is Native American “white mountain.”  The courthouse is located at the intersection of Court and Butte streets.  California State Highway 299 is three blocks to the north of the location.  Redding gets its name from a land agent of the Central Pacific Railroad, Benjamin Redding. 

Shasta County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, controller, and treasurer (executive).  It has 5 Supervisors (legislative.)  Nine Superior Court Judges, clerk, and counsel serve Shasta County (judicial.)  The county is situated in north California north of Sacramento, California.  The Sacramento River crosses the county from north to south.  The county center is 17.1 miles Northeast of Redding nearer Bella Vista.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Siskiyou, Modoc, Lassen, Plumas, Tehama, and Trinity counties.  The county is shaped like a bag of popcorn turned on its side facing west.  Redding is slightly south and west of the county center.  Redding is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 51.4% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced RED-DING.  

The area of the county is 3786 square miles.  It is 13 out of 58 in the state.  It ranks 30 out of 58 in population in the state.  It has a density of 48.1 persons per square mile making it 38 out of 58 in the state.  Shasta County has 63.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 5 goes from Siskiyou County to Tehama County, north to south.  This county is in the Redding Metropolitan Statistical Area.
