The Classical Revival style facility was constructed in 1871.  Gosling, Bennett, Ball, and Bender are the architects.  The building was rebuilt in 1900 following a fire and renovated in 1922.  An Administrative Center was added in 1952 and a Justice Center was added in 1961.  A newer courthouse is being built in Yuba City to be completed in 2016.  Dating from February 18, 1850, Sutter County is an original county.  It is the 22nd county.  Nicholas (1850 & 1851), Auburn (1850), Vernon (1851), and Yuba City (1855) have all been the county seat.  The county was named for John Augustus Sutter, the first discoverer of gold in California.  It is located on 2nd Street between B and C streets.  California State Highway 20 is eight blocks to the north of the site.  The county seat is named for the Yuba River.  The river’s name is debated as a corruption of the Spanish word for “grapes” (uba) or the tribal name of the Maidu Native Americans (yuba).  Yuba County has the same name source. 

Sutter County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, controller, and treasurer (executive).  It has 5 Supervisors (legislative.)  Four Superior Court Judges, clerk, and counsel serve Sutter County (judicial.)  Sutter County is located in north central California to the north of Sacramento.  The Sacramento River is the western border and the Feather River is the eastern border.  The county center is 6.5 miles South-Southwest of Yuba City.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Butte, Yuba, Placer, Sacramento, Yolo, and Colusa counties.  The county is shaped like a skinny funnel.  Yuba City is in the northern half of the county on the eastern border.  Yuba City is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 70.4% of the county population.  The county seat is pronounced YUE-BA CI-TEE.  

The area of the county is 603 square miles.  It is 54 out of 58 in the state.  It ranks 37 out of 58 in population in the state.  It has a density of 165.2 persons per square mile making it 22 out of 58 in the state.  Sutter County has 79.5% of its population in its incorporated areas.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.  This county is in the Yuba City Metropolitan Statistical Area.
