The tall columns give the 1920 Classical Revival structure its governmental appearance. George C. Sellon provided the designs. An annex was added in 1980 and the courthouse was remodeled in 1994. There was an 1860 version of the county courthouse in Red Bluff. A new courthouse was under construction in 2016. Tehama was the original county seat with Red Bluff taking over in 1857. On March 1, 1856, Tehama County was created from parts of Butte, Colusa, and Shasta counties as the 41st county. The county was named for a Native American tribe. It is located on Washington Street between Oak and Pine streets. Red Bluff gets its name from the reddish colored sand and gravel cliffs in the area.
The area of the county is 2951 square miles. It is 21 out of 58 in the state. It ranks 41 out of 58 in population in the state. It has a density of 22.3 persons per square mile making it 46 out of 58 in the state. Tehama County has 35.5% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 5 is three blocks east across the Sacramento River. This county is in the Red Bluff Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Four Superior Court Judges, clerk, and counsel serve Tehama County (judicial.) The county is situated in the north of California north of Sacramento, California. The Sacramento River crosses the county from north to south. The county center is 8.5 miles Southeast of Red Bluff. The county is surrounded clockwise by Shasta, Plumas, Butte, Glenn, Mendocino, and Trinity counties. Interstate Highway 5 crosses from north to south from Shasta County to Glenn County. The county is a flattened bowl of popcorn. Red Bluff is slightly north of the center of the county. Red Bluff is the county seat and the largest city. It is 22.3% of the county population. The county is pronounced TE-HAE-MA.
