The Beaux Arts style structure was built in 1917 from the design of W. H. Weeks.  There was an 1864 courthouse also in Woodland.  Washington (1850) and Woodland (1862) have both been the county seat.  A county administration building was added in 1983.       A new courthouse was planned in 2017.  Yolo County is an original having been created on February 18, 1850.  It is the 25th county.  The county’s name comes for a Native American tribe.  Woodland is a geographic term for its location among the oak trees.  The courthouse is sited on Court Street between 2nd and 3rd streets.  California State Highway 113 passes two miles east of the site. 

Yolo County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, controller, and treasurer (executive).  It has 5 Supervisors (legislative.)  Ten Superior Court Judges, clerk, and counsel serve Yolo County (judicial.)  The county is just to the west of Sacramento, California in north central California.  The county center is 4.3 miles South of Woodland.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Colusa, Sutter, Sacramento, Sonoma, Napa, and Lake counties.  The county is a crooked, one-leg stool leaning to the northwest.  Woodland is east and slightly north of center.  Davis is on the southern border of the county.  Woodland is the county seat and Davis is the largest city.  Woodland is 28.2% of the county population while Davis is 30.9% of the county population.  The county is pronounced YOE-LOE.  

The area of the county is 1012 square miles.  It is 41 out of 58 in the state.  It ranks 27 out of 58 in population in the state.  It has a density of 213.8 persons per square mile making it 19 out of 58 in the state.  Yolo County has 87.3% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 5 comes from the north (Colusa County) and goes to the east (Sacramento County).  Interstate Highway 80 crosses east to west from Sacramento County to Solano County.  The Sacramento River is the eastern border for the county.  This county is in the Sacramento-Arden Arcade-Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area.
