A Modern style building is the Yuba County courthouse. It was built in 1962 using the designs of Harold Hansen. In 1855, the original courthouse for the county was built in Marysville, the only county seat. This is an original county dating back to February 18, 1850. It is the 26th county. The county is named for the Yuba River. The river’s name is debated between a corruption of the Spanish word for “grapes” (uba) and the tribal name of the Maidu Indians (yuba). The county seat of Sutter County has the same source for its name. Marysville was named for the wife of Charles Covillaud (one of the town founders), Mary Murphy, who survived the Donner Party. The building is located on 5th Street between B and C streets. California State Highway 70 is five blocks west of the location.

The county is shaped like a watering can. The Feather River is its western border. Marysville is in the south and on the western border of the county. Marysville is the county seat and the largest city. It is 16.7% of the county population. The county is pronounced YUE-BA.
The area of the county is 630 square miles. It is 52 out of 58 in the state. It ranks 39 out of 58 in population in the state. It has a density of 129.5 persons per square mile making it 26 out of 58 in the state. Yuba County has 21.5% of its population in its incorporated areas. There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county. This county is in the Yuba City Metropolitan Statistical Area.
