A very nice Native American appearance is provided in the courthouse.  It was built in 1935 at 4th Street at San Juan Avenue.  It is located one block north of United States Highway 160.  George C. Emery is the architect for this Spanish Mission Revival red brick courthouse.  The courthouse was renovated in 1981.  A County Office building was built in 1974.  Alamosa County was established on March 8, 1913 from Costilla County as the 63rd county.  Alamosa has been the only county seat.  The county and county seat get their names from the Spanish word for “grove of cottonwood trees.”  The center of the county is 7.4 miles Northeast of Alamosa. 

Alamosa County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, manager, coroner, and treasurer (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Four District Court Judges serve Alamosa, Conejos, Costilla, Mineral, Rio Grande, and Saguache counties and a Trial Court Judge, clerk, and county attorney serve Alamosa County (judicial.)  The county is in south central Colorado southwest of Pueblo, Colorado.  The Rio Grande flows through this county.  Alamosa County is a rectangle with the southeast corner missing.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Saguache, Huerfano, Costilla, Conejos, and Rio Grande counties.  The City of Alamosa is located in the south quarter of the county.  Alamosa is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 59.9% of the county population.  The county and county seat are pronounced AL-A-MOE-SA.    

The area of the county is 723.2 square miles.  The county is 53 out of 64 in the state.  It ranks 31 out of 64 in population in the state.  It has a density of 22.7 persons per square mile making it 21 out of 64 in the state.  Alamosa County has 60.4% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 160 crosses east to west in the county from Costilla County to Rio Grande County.  United States Highway 285 enters joined with United States Highway 160 from Rio Grande County, splits in Alamosa, and exits south into Conejos County.
