The Art Deco style stone building was built in 1934. The courthouse is on Spruce, 13th, Pearl, and 14th streets. Colorado State Highway 7 is two blocks west of the site. There was an 1882 version of the courthouse in Boulder, the only county seat. A Hall of Justice was added in 1961 and a Justice Center was added in 1976. Veteran memorials are on the grounds. An auxiliary courthouse in Longmont augments the current facility. Boulder County was one of the original 17 counties formed on November 1, 1861. It is the 2nd county. Boulder County was the birthplace of 1 Colorado Governor, Jared S. Polis. The building architect was Glen H. Huntington. Boulder Creek provided the names for the county and county seat. The numerous boulders in the area yielded the creek’s name. The center of the county is 7 miles West of Boulder.
Boulder County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, manager, coroner, and treasurer (executive). It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.) Eight District Court Judges and Two Trial Court Judges, clerk, and county attorney serve Boulder County (judicial.) Boulder County is in eastern Colorado just north of Denver, Colorado. The county is surrounded clockwise by Larimer, Weld, Broomfield, Jefferson, Gilpin, and Grand counties.
The area of the county is 740.5 square miles. The county is 51 out of 64 in the state. It ranks 8 out of 64 in population in the state. It has a density of 446.7 persons per square mile making it 5 out of 64 in the state. Boulder County has 86.9% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 36 enters the county from the north, Larimer County, and exits to the southeast, Broomfield County. United States Highway 287 crosses north to south in the county, Larimer County to Broomfield County. The City of Boulder is in the Southeast quarter of the county. Boulder is the county seat and the largest city. It is 32.7% of the county population. The county shape is rectangular with a wavy border following the Continental Divide in the west. The county is in the Boulder Metropolitan Statistical Area.
