The school appearance of the red brick structure was created in 1908.  It is on South 1st Street between East 1st Street and West 1st Street.  United States Highway 385 is West 1st Street coming through this small town.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  There was an earlier courthouse in Cheyenne Wells, the only county seat.  The county was formed on March 25, 1889 from parts of Bent and Elbert counties as the 45th county.  The building architect is John James Huddart in a Georgian Revival design.  The county is named for the Native American tribe.  The county seat is a combination of the tribe and nearby wells.  The center of the county is 15.1 miles West of Cheyenne Wells nearer Kit Carson. 

Cheyenne County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, manager, coroner, and treasurer (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Two District Court Judges serve Cheyenne, Baca, Kiowa, and Prowers counties and a Trial Court Judge, clerk, and county attorney serve Cheyenne County (judicial.)  Cheyenne County is in eastern Colorado on the border with Kansas.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Kit Carson County and Kansas and Lincoln and Kiowa counties.  

The area of the county is 1781.9 square miles.  The county is 25 out of 64 in the state.  It ranks 59 out of 64 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1.0 persons per square mile making it 61 out of 64 in the state.  Cheyenne County has 58.0% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 40 crosses the county from east to west, Kansas to Lincoln County.  United States Highway 287 enters the county joined with United States Highway 40 from Lincoln County, northwest and exits south into Kiowa County.  United States Highway 385 comes north to south in the county, Kit Carson County to Kiowa County.   Cheyenne County is a wide rectangle.  Cheyenne Wells is located in the eastern third of the county.  Cheyenne Wells is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 43.1% of the county population.  The county and county seat are pronounced SHIE-EN.
