A small new tan brick and stucco courthouse sits on Main Street between 6th and 7th streets. Colorado State Highway 96 is six blocks south of the site. The 1915 courthouse sits nearby as Ordway has been the only county seat. The current courthouse was built in 2003 using the Modern designs of Eivid W. Nilson. A falcon statue sits in front. Crowley County was established on February 27, 1911 as the 62nd county from Otero County (which was created from Bent County.) Senator John H. Crowley is the namesake of the county. The county seat is named for Businessman George Ordway. The center of the county is 5.9 miles Northwest of Ordway.
Crowley County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, manager, coroner, and treasurer (executive). It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.) Two District Court Judges serve Crowley, Bent, and Otero counties and a Trial Court Judge, clerk, and county attorney serve Crowley County (judicial.) The county is located in southeast Colorado. The Arkansas River forms the southwest border of the county. The county is surrounded clockwise by Lincoln, Kiowa, Otero, Pueblo, and El Paso counties.
The area of the county is 800.3 square miles. The county is 49 out of 64 in the state. It ranks 47 out of 64 in population in the state. It has a density of 7.4 persons per square mile making it 38 out of 64 in the state. Crowley County has 30.4% of its population in its incorporated areas. There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county. The county shape is basically rectangular with the southeast corner cut out partially. Ordway is in the southern quarter of the county. Ordway is the county seat and the largest city. It is 17.9% of the county population. Pueblo, Colorado is located just to the west of the county.
