The Modern style dark red brick and concrete structure was built in 1958 to serve Delta County. The building is located at Palmer and 5th streets. United States Highway 50 is one block east of the courthouse. Eugene D. Sternberg is the designer. An 1896 courthouse was also located in the City of Delta, the only county seat. Delta County was created on February 11, 1883 from parts of Gunnison County as the 35th county. The city and county both get their names from the delta of the Uncompaghre River. The center of the county is 24.4 miles Northeast of Delta nearer Hotchkiss.
Delta County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, manager, coroner, and treasurer (executive). It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.) Five District Court Judges serve Delta, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Montrose, Ouray, and San Miguel counties and a Trial Court Judge, clerk, and county attorney serve Delta County (judicial.) The county is located in western Colorado. The Gunnison and Uncompaghre rivers flow through the county. The county is surrounded clockwise by Gunnison, Montrose, and Mesa counties.
The area of the county is 1149.4 square miles. The county is 40 out of 64 in the state. It ranks 18 out of 64 in population in the state. It has a density of 27.1 persons per square mile making it 19 out of 64 in the state. Delta County has 55.1% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 50 crosses the western part of the county from north to south, Mesa County to Montrose County. The county shape is a triangle pointing to the southeast. The City of Delta is in the extreme southwest corner of the county. Delta is the county seat and the largest city. It is 29.0% of the county population.
