A Modern style is the look to the 2002 tan/yellow brick courthouse. The structure is located on Justice Center Drive. United States Highway 50 is one block north of the location. MCB Architects are the designers. There was an 1886 courthouse also in Canon City, the only county seat. The county was established as an original county on November 1, 1861. It is the 7th county. Fremont County was named for Presidential candidate John C. Fremont. Canon City was named for the Royal Gorge and is Spanish for “canyon.” The Arkansas River flows through the middle of the county.

The center of the county is 32.2 miles West-Northwest of Canon City. The county is surrounded clockwise by Teller, El Paso, Pueblo, Custer, Saguache, Chaffee, and Park counties. United States Highway 50 crosses the county east to west, Pueblo County to Chaffee County.
The area of the county is 1533.1 square miles. The county is 32 out of 64 in the state. It ranks 16 out of 64 in population in the state. It has a density of 31.9 persons per square mile making it 18 out of 64 in the state. Fremont County has 46.6% of its population in its incorporated areas. The county shape is overall rectangular with an extension on the northwest two-thirds and the western border following mountain ridges. Canon City is located in the southeast quarter of the county. Canon City is the county seat and the largest city. It is 35.0% of the county population. The county seat is pronounced KAN-YON SI-TEE. The county is in the Canon City Micropolitan Statistical Area.
