The Art Deco style tan brick building that is the Grand County courthouse is on Byers Street at Maple Street. United States Highway 40 is Byers Street through this community. Robert K. Fuller is the architect for the building. A separate Judicial Center was built in 2008. This courthouse was built in 1937 with Grand Lake and Hot Sulphur Springs both being county seats since the county’s founding. Grand County was created on February 2, 1874 from Summit County as the 22nd county. Later, Moffat and Routt counties were taken from Grand County. The county was named for the Grand River. Hot Sulphur Springs was named for the local springs. The center of the county is 12.7 miles Northwest of Hot Sulphur Springs nearer Parshall.
Grand County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, manager, coroner, and treasurer (executive). It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.) Three District Court Judges serve Grand, Moffat, and Routt counties and a Trial Court Judge, clerk, and county attorney serve Grand County (judicial.) The county is located in the north part of the state. The Colorado River originates in this county. The county surrounded clockwise by Jackson, Larimer, Boulder, Gilpin, Clear Creek, Summit, Eagle and Routt counties.
The area of the county is 1868.5 square miles. The county is 21 out of 64 in the state. It ranks 32 out of 64 in population in the state. It has a density of 8.4 persons per square mile making it 36 out of 64 in the state. Grand County has 45.2% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 40 travels southeast to northwest through the county, Clear Creek County to Routt County. The county shape is a fat capital letter U. Hot Sulphur Springs is located in the center of the county. Granby is in the eastern third of the county. Hot Sulphur Springs is the county seat and Granby is the largest city. Hot Sulphur Springs is 4.4% of the county population while Granby is 13.2% of the county population. The Continental Divide makes up the eastern and northern borders of the county.
