A dome sits on top of the classic Beaux Arts style courthouse building.  It was constructed in 1909 using designs from John. J. Huddart.  There was an earlier courthouse in Sterling, the only county seat, dating from 1889.  It is located at Main, 3rd, Ash, and 4th streets.  United States Highway 6 passes in front of the courthouse as 3rd Street.  A Statue of Liberty replica sits in front as well as veteran memorials and a gazebo.  A Justice Center was added in 2003.  The county was founded on February 25, 1887 from Weld County as the 42nd county.  Colonel John A. Logan was the source name for the county.  Sterling, Illinois provided the name for the county seat.  The center of the county is 15.9 miles Northeast of Sterling nearer Iliff. 

Logan County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, manager, coroner, and treasurer (executive).  It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.)  Four District Court Judges serve Logan, Kit Carson, Morgan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington, and Yuma counties and a Trial Court Judge, clerk, and county attorney serve Logan County (judicial.)  Logan County is in the northeast part of Colorado on the border with Nebraska.  The South Platte River dominates the landscape through the county.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Nebraska and Phillips, Sedgwick, Yuma, Washington, Morgan, and Weld counties.  

The area of the county is 1845.3 square miles.  The county is 23 out of 64 in the state.  It ranks 25 out of 64 in population in the state.  It has a density of 11.7 persons per square mile making it 32 out of 64 in the state.  Logan County has 69.8% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 76 goes northeast to southwest through the county from Sedgwick County to Washington County.  United States Highway 6 crosses east to west from Phillips County into Washington County.  United States Highway 138 parallels Interstate Highway 76 in from Sedgwick County but it terminates at Sterling.  The county is rectangular with the southwest corner cut out.  Sterling is in the southwest quarter of the county.  Sterling is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 63.8% of the county population.  The county is in the Sterling Micropolitan Statistical Area.
