A tan brick and masonry courthouse appears to be missing the rest of the tower on top. A Justice Center was built in 1986 of red/brown bricks and stone. Located on Warner Street at Beaver Avenue this facility was designed by Eugene G. Groves. The building is an Art Deco style courthouse. United States Highway 34 passes two blocks north of the site. This 1936 courthouse was preceded by a 1906 facility in Fort Morgan, the only county seat. The county was formed on February 19, 1889 from Weld County as the 43rd county. The county and county seat were named for the fort which was named for Colonel Christopher A. Morgan. The center of the county is in Fort Morgan 1.4 miles North of the city center.

Four District Court Judges serve Morgan, Kit Carson, Logan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington, and Yuma counties and a Trial Court Judge, clerk, and county attorney serve Morgan County (judicial.) The county is located in the northeast part of Colorado to the northeast of Denver, Colorado and east of Fort Collins, Colorado. The South Platte River flows through the county. The county is surrounded clockwise by Logan, Washington, Adams, and Weld counties.
The area of the county is 1293.8 square miles. The county is 34 out of 64 in the state. It ranks 20 out of 64 in population in the state. It has a density of 22.5 persons per square mile making it 22 out of 64 in the state. Morgan County has 67.2% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 76 crosses east to west from Washington County to Weld County. United States Highway 6 parallels Interstate Highway 76 from Washington County to Weld County. United States Highway 34 also crosses east to west from Washington County to Weld County. The county has a rectangular shape with Fort Morgan being located near the center. Fort Morgan is the county seat and largest city. It is 39.8% of the county population. The county is in the Fort Morgan Micropolitan Statistical Area.
