The governmental masonry Art Deco and Classical Revival structure was built in 1923. The structure is located on Lincoln Street between 5th and 6th streets. United States Highway 40 runs in front of the site. Robert K. Fuller is the architect. The building was renovated in 2007 and a Justice Center was built in the same year. The county was created on January 29, 1877 from Grand County as the 28th county. Steamboat Springs has been the only county seat. Moffat County was split from Routt County in 1911. The first governor of Colorado, John Long Routt, is the namesake for the county. A local spring which sounded like a steamboat provided the inspiration for the county seat name. The center of the county is 16.6 miles West-Northwest of Steamboat Springs nearer Milner. Routt County is in northwest Colorado on the border with Wyoming.
Routt County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, manager, coroner, and treasurer (executive). It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.) Three District Court Judges serve Routt, Grand, and Moffat counties and a Trial Court Judge, clerk, and county attorney serve Routt County (judicial.) The Continental Divide is the northeast border of the county. The Yampa River flows through this county. The county is surrounded clockwise by Wyoming and Jackson, Grand, Eagle, Garfield, Rio Blanco, and Moffat counties.
The area of the county is 2362.1 square miles. The county is 15 out of 64 in the state. It ranks 23 out of 64 in population in the state. It has a density of 10.5 persons per square mile making it 33 out of 64 in the state. Routt County has 66.2% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 40 crosses east to west through the county, Grand County to Moffat County. The county shape is the number 9. Steamboat Springs is in the eastern third of the county. Steamboat Springs is the county seat and the largest city. It is 53.2% of the county population. The county is pronounced ROOT.
