A Federalist style red brick and stone building was built in 1904 to serve Teller County. The structure is located on Bennett Street at 1st Street. Colorado State Highway 67 is Bennett Street through Cripple Creek. Teller County was created on March 23, 1899 from El Paso County as the 57th county. A. J. Smith designed this courthouse. A County Administrative building was added in 1999. Cripple Creek has been the only county seat. The county was named for Senator Henry M. Teller. The county seat is named for a local creek. The center of the county is 17 miles North of Cripple Creek nearer Divide.
Teller County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, manager, coroner, and treasurer (executive). It has 3 Commissioners (legislative.) Twenty-one District Court Judges serve Teller and El Paso counties and a Trial Court Judge, clerk, and county attorney serve Teller County (judicial.) The county is in central Colorado just to the west of Colorado Springs, Colorado. The county is surrounded clockwise by Douglas, El Paso, Fremont, Park, and Jefferson counties.
The area of the county is 558.6 square miles. The county is 56 out of 64 in the state. It ranks 24 out of 64 in population in the state. It has a density of 44.2 persons per square mile making it 14 out of 64 in the state. Teller County has 38.4% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 24 crosses the northern part of the county east to west from El Paso County to Park County. The county is shaped like a capital letter L. Cripple Creek is located in the southwest quarter of the county. Woodland Park is in the northeast corner of the county. Cripple Creek is the county seat and Woodland Park is the largest city. Cripple Creek is 4.7% of the county population while Woodland Park is 32.0% of the county population. The county is in the Colorado Springs Metropolitan Statistical Area.
