On 1st Street between Ash and Birch streets is the red brick Federalist style courthouse. The building was constructed in 1909 using a design from John James Huddart. United States Highway 34 is 1st Street through Akron. The courthouse features a tower and the grounds have veteran memorials. On February 9, 1887 Washington County was created from Logan, Adams, and Arapahoe counties as the 41st county. Akron has been the only county seat. An Annex has been built and a Justice Center was added in 2001. The county was named for President George Washington. The county seat was named for Akron, Ohio. The center of the county is 11 miles South of Akron.

Four District Court Judges serve Washington, Kit Carson, Logan, Morgan, Phillips, Sedgwick, and Yuma counties and a Trial Court Judge, clerk, and county attorney serve Washington County (judicial.) The county is located in the northeast part of Colorado. The South Platte River cuts the extreme northwest corner of the county. The county is surrounded clockwise by Logan, Yuma, Kit Carson, Lincoln, Kiowa, Arapahoe, Adams, and Morgan counties.
The area of the county is 2522.9 square miles. The county is 12 out of 64 in the state. It ranks 52 out of 64 in population in the state. It has a density of 1.9 persons per square mile making it 57 out of 64 in the state. Washington County has 47.3% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 76 cuts the same northwest corner of the county from Logan County to Morgan County, north to west. United States Highway 6 parallels Interstate Highway 76 from Logan County to Morgan County. United States Highway 34 passes east to west from Yuma County to Morgan County. United States Highway 36 enters from Yuma County, east, to Arapahoe County, west. The county is shaped like the capital letter J with Akron being in the northern quarter of the county. Akron is the county seat and the largest city. It is 36.6% of the county population.
