The Classical Revival governmental courthouse is built of masonry and concrete.  The building was constructed in 1917 and restored in 1965.  The building architect is William N. Bowman.  The structure is located on 9th Street and 9th Avenue.  United States Highway 85 Business is one block east of the site.  It features columns and a replica of the Statue of Liberty.  There were 1861 and 1883 courthouses also located in Greeley, the only county seat.  An Administration/Courts building was added in 1976.  Weld County was organized on November 1, 1861 as one of the original counties.  It is the 16th county.  It later provided territory to create Washington, Logan, Morgan, Yuma, Phillips, and Sedgwick counties.  The county seat is named for writer Horace Greeley.  Lawyer Lewis Ledyard Weld is the namesake of the county.  The center of the county is 45.4 miles Northeast of Greeley nearer Briggsdale. 

Weld County government consists of a sheriff, assessor, manager, coroner, and treasurer (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Nine District Court Judges and Four Trial Court Judges, clerk, and county attorney serve Weld County (judicial.)  The county lies in the northeast part of Colorado bordering both Wyoming and Nebraska on its northern border.  Fort Collins, Colorado is west of the county.  The South Platte River crosses the southern part of the county.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Nebraska and Logan, Morgan, Adams, Broomfield, Boulder, and Larimer counties and Wyoming.   

The area of the county is 4013.8 square miles.  The county is 3 out of 64 in the state.  It ranks 9 out of 64 in population in the state.  It has a density of 82.0 persons per square mile making it 10 out of 64 in the state.  Weld County has 85.9% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 25 crosses north to south in the county first from Wyoming to Larimer County and again from Larimer County into Broomfield County.  Interstate Highway 76 crosses the southeast corner of the county from Morgan County, east, to Adams County, south.  United States Highway 6 is joined with Interstate Highway 76 from Morgan County to Adams County.  United States Highway 34 crosses east to west from Morgan County to Larimer County.  United States Highway 85 travels north to south entering from Wyoming and exiting into Adams County.  United States Highway 87 is joined with Interstate Highway 25 from Wyoming to Larimer County to Broomfield County.  The county is shaped like a small letter r.  Greeley is located in the southwest quarter of the county.  Greeley is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 33.1% of the county population.  The county is in the Greeley Metropolitan Statistical Area.
