The 1913 Greek Revival building remains the official courthouse. It was enlarged in 1925 and renovated in 1962. A County Government building was built in 1968. The concrete courthouse is located on Palm Street at Pine Street. United States Highway 1 is one block east of the site. The architect of the courthouse is David P. Godwin. It features columns. There are augmenting courthouses in Melbourne and Viera. Brevard County was named for State Comptroller George Washington Brevard. Confederate Colonel Henry T. Titus inspired the county seat name. St. Lucia County was created on March 14, 1844 as the 24th county and renamed to Brevard in 1855. The county was taken from Orange County. St. Lucie County was cut away in 1905 from the southern part of the county. Susanna (1855) and Titusville (1879) have both been the county seat.
Brevard County government consists of a manager, sheriff, and appraiser (executive). It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.) Fifteen Circuit Court Judges serve Brevard and Seminole counties and Eleven County Court Judges, clerk, and county attorney serve Brevard County (judicial.) The county is in east central Florida east of Orlando, Florida on the Atlantic Ocean. The center of the county is 34.9 miles South-Southeast of Titusville nearer Palm Shores. The county is surrounded clockwise by Volusia County and the Atlantic Ocean and Indian River, Osceola, Orange, and Seminole counties.
The area of the county is 1018 square miles. It is 15 out of 67 counties in the state. It ranks 10 out of 67 in population in the state. It has a density of 595.9 persons per square mile making it 12 out of 67 in the state. Brevard County has 63.1% of its population in its incorporated areas. Interstate Highway 95 goes north to south in the county from Volusia County to Indian River County. United States Highway 1 parallels Interstate Highway 95 from Volusia County to Indian River County. United States Highway 192 begins in the county and travels west into Osceola County. St. Johns River is part of the western border. The county shape is a walking stick. Titusville is in the northern quarter of the county. Palm Bay is in the southern quarter of the county. Titusville is the county seat and Palm Bay is the largest city. Titusville is 8.0% of the county population while Palm Bay is 19.7% of the county population. The county is pronounced BRE-VARD. This county is in the Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville Metropolitan Statistical Area.
