The courthouse is a Modern style masonry and glass building.  This 1956 facility was remodeled in 1965 and enlarged in 1998.  The building designer is Morris Peterman.  It is at the corner of 6th Street between 1st and 3rd avenues.  Its site is four blocks west of United States Highway 1.  A Judicial Center was completed in 2017.  A County Administration building was built in 1985.  Broward County was named for Governor Napoleon Bonaparte Broward.  The county seat and fort were named for the fort commander, Major William Lauderdale.  Broward County was created on April 30, 1915 from Palm Beach and Dade counties as the 51st county.  Fort Lauderdale has been the only county seat. 

Broward County government consists of a manager, sheriff, and appraiser (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Fifty-four Circuit Court Judges and Thirty County Court Judges, clerk, and county attorney serve Broward County (judicial.) The county is in southeastern Florida north of Miami, Florida.  The center of the county is 27.7 miles West of Fort Lauderdale nearer Weston.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Palm Beach County and the Atlantic Ocean and Dade, Collier, and Hendry counties. 

The area of the county is 1209 square miles.  It is 7 out of 67 counties in the state.  It ranks 2 out of 67 in population in the state.  It has a density of 1608.3 persons per square mile making it 2 out of 67 in the state.  Broward County has 99.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 75 comes in from Dade County, south, and exits west into Collier County.  Interstate Highway 95 goes north to south in the county from Palm Beach County to Dade County.  United States Highway 1 parallels Interstate Highway 95 from Palm Beach County to Dade County.  United States Highway 27 also crosses from Palm Beach County, north, to Dade County, south.  United States Highway 441 enters from Palm Beach County and exits into Dade County.  The Atlantic Ocean is on the eastern border of the county.  The county is rectangle with Fort Lauderdale sited on the east, central coast.  Fort Lauderdale is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 9.4% of the county population.  The county is pronounced BROW-ARD.  This county is in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach Metropolitan Statistical Area.
