The Modern style tan brick and glass courthouse of Citrus County was built in 1978. It is located on Apopka Avenue north of Courthouse Square. United States Highway 41 is one block south. Craig, Balley and Associates are the building architects. The grounds feature gazebos. There were 1891 and 1913 versions of courthouses in Inverness. Mansfield (1887) and Inverness (1891) have been the county seats. The county was created on June 2, 1887 out of Hernando County as the 44th county. The county is named for the citrus crops which grow throughout the area. The county seat is named for Inverness, Scotland.

Five Circuit Court Judges serve Citrus, Hernando, Lake, Marion, and Sumter counties and a County Court Judge, clerk, and county attorney serve Citrus County (judicial.) Citrus County is in west central Florida on the Gulf of Mexico. Gainesville, Florida is north and Tampa, Florida is south. The center of the county is 14.2 miles West-Northwest of Inverness nearer Lecanto. The county is surrounded clockwise by Marion, Sumter, and Hernando counties and the Gulf of Mexico and Levy County.
The area of the county is 584 square miles. It is 47 out of 67 counties in the state. It ranks 33 out of 67 in population in the state. It has a density of 263.5 persons per square mile making it 28 out of 67 in the state. Citrus County has 7.1% of its population in its incorporated areas. United States Highway 19 crosses north to south in the county from Levy County to Hernando County. United States Highway 41 also goes north to south from Marion County to Hernando County. The county is shape like the State of Ohio rotated 90 degrees counter clockwise. Inverness is located in the eastern third of the county. Inverness is the county seat and the largest city. It is 4.9% of the county population. The county seat is pronounced IN-VUR-NES. This county is in the Homosassa Springs Micropolitan Statistical Area.
