A red brick Classical Revival building with few unique features is the county courthouse.  Located on Florida State Highway 20 at Pogo Street in this small town, this structure was built in 1942.  Jack Culpepper is the building architect.  There were additions added in 1971 and 2000.  Veteran memorials sit in front of the structure.  The county was named for the ideal of liberty.  Bristol, England provided the county seat name.  Bristol has been the only county seat.  The county was created on December 15, 1855 from Gadsden County as the 33rd county. 

Liberty County government consists of a sheriff and 5 Commissioners.  Thirteen Circuit Court Judges serve Liberty, Franklin, Gadsden, Jefferson, Leon, and Wakulla counties and a County Court Judge serves Liberty County.  The county is situated in northwest Florida to the west of Tallahassee, Florida.  The center of the county is 6.7 miles Southeast of Bristol nearer Devils Branch.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Gadsden, Leon, Wakulla, Franklin, Gulf, Calhoun, and Jackson counties. 

The area of the county is 836 square miles.  It is 23 out of 67 counties in the state.  It ranks 67 out of 67 in population in the state.  It has a density of 9.5 persons per square mile making it 67 out of 67 in the state.  Liberty County has 11.6% of its population in its incorporated areas.  There are no Interstates or United States Highways in the county.  The Apalachicola River forms its western border and the Ochlochonee River is its eastern border.  The county is shaped like a pile of leaves.  Bristol is in the northwest quarter of the county on the border.  Bristol is the county seat and the largest, and only incorporated city.  It is 11.6% of the county population.
