The Modern Moorish stucco with tile roof courthouse was built in 1994.  It is situated at Lewis Speedway and Dixie Highway (United States Highway 1.)  Spills, Candela, and Partners are the architects.  A County Administration Building built in 1994 is part of the government complex.  There was an 1886 version of the courthouse as Saint Augustine has been the only county seat.  Saint John the Baptist is the namesake of the county.  The land for Saint Augustine was discovered on the Feast Day of Augustine.  Saint Johns County was established July 21, 1821 as one of the 1st two Florida counties.  It included everything east of the Suwannee River. 

Saint Johns County government consists of a manager, sheriff, and appraiser (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Twenty-five Circuit Court Judges serve Saint Johns, Flagler, Putnam, and Volusia counties and Two County Court Judges, clerk, and county attorney serve Saint Johns County (judicial.) Saint Johns County is in the northeast part of Florida.  Jacksonville, Florida is directly north of the county.  The Atlantic Ocean is the east border and the Saint Johns River is the west border.  The center of the county is 14.5 miles Northwest of Saint Augustine.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Duval County and the Atlantic Ocean and Flagler, Putnam, and Clay counties. 

The area of the county is 609 square miles.  It is 42 out of 67 counties in the state.  It ranks 24 out of 67 in population in the state.  It has a density of 449.0 persons per square mile making it 17 out of 67 in the state.  Saint Johns County has 7.7% of its population in its incorporated areas.  Interstate Highway 95 goes north to south from Duval County to Flagler County.  United States Highway 1 parallels Interstate Highway 95 from Duval County to Flagler County.  The county looks like a hand with the first finger point up.  Saint Augustine is in the southeast on the coast.  Saint Augustine is the county seat and the largest city.  It is 5.2% of the county population.  This county is in the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area.
