The white masonry 1948 courthouse is located in the small city of Crawfordville.  The location is on United States Highway 301 (Crawfordville Highway) and Arran Highway.  James A. Stripling provided the Art Deco style designs.  The building was renovated in 1991.  Veteran memorials are on the grounds.  There was also an 1894 courthouse in Crawfordville.  Port Leon, Newport, and Crawfordville have all served as the county seat.  Wakulla is Native American for “spring of water.”  Crawfordville is named for settler John L. Crawford.  Wakulla County was formed on March 11, 1843 from Leon County as the 23rd county. 

Wakulla County government consists of a manager, sheriff, and appraiser (executive).  It has 5 Commissioners (legislative.)  Thirteen Circuit Court Judges serve Wakulla, Franklin, Jefferson, Leon, and Liberty counties and a County Court Judge, clerk, and county attorney serve Wakulla County (judicial.) The county is in the northern bend of the state on the Gulf of Mexico.  Tallahassee, Florida is just north of the county.  The Ochlochonee River is its western border.  The center of the county is 6.1 miles South-Southeast of Crawfordville nearer Medart.  The county is surrounded clockwise by Leon and Jefferson counties and the Gulf of Mexico and Franklin and Liberty counties. 

The area of the county is 607 square miles.  It is 43 out of 67 counties in the state.  It ranks 49 out of 67 in population in the state.  It has a density of 55.6 persons per square mile making it 46 out of 67 in the state.  Wakulla County has 2.1% of its population in its incorporated areas.  United States Highway 98 travels east to west through the county from Jefferson County to Franklin County.  United States Highway 319 enters from the north, Leon County, and exits southwest into Franklin County.  A fat hook lying face down is the county description.  Crawfordville is near the center of the county.  Sopchoppy is in the southwest corner.  Crawfordville is county seat and Sopchoppy is the largest city.  Crawfordville is 14.4% of the county population although it is unincorporated.  Sopchoppy is 1.2% of the county population.  The county is pronounced WA-KOOL-LA.  The largest city is pronounced SOP-CHOP-PEE. This county is in the Tallahassee Metropolitan Statistical Area.
