The capitol was originally completed in 1969 using the designs of Belt, Lemon, and Lo and John Carl Warnecke. It is located on Beretania Street between Richards and Punchbowl streets. Interstate Highway H-1 is three blocks northwest of the capitol. The Capitol is designed in Bauhaus (Hawaiian International Architecture) style. Honolulu has been the capital since 1845. The major supporting structure is the Supreme Court Courthouse in Honolulu. The state was officially created as the 50th state on August 21, 1959 from Native American lands and Hawaiian Territory. The state’s name comes from Hawaiian word meaning “homeland.” The name of Honolulu comes from the Hawaiian word meaning “sheltered harbor.” Mauna Kea in Hawaii County is the highest point and the Pacific Ocean is the lowest point at sea level.
Hawaii government, in the Executive, consists of a Governor and Lieutenant Governor. There are 25 Senators and 51 Representatives in the Legislative. Five Supreme Court Justices and Six Court of Appeals Justices serve Hawaii in the Judicial. Hawaii is located in the Pacific Ocean southwest of mainland United States. The geographic center is in Maui County 28 miles offshore of Molokai. The state is completely surrounded by the Pacific Ocean.
The area is 10,932 square miles. It is 43rd largest state in the country. It is the 40th most populated state in the country. It has a density of 133.1 persons per square mile making it 20th in the country. It has no major rivers. Honolulu is located on the island of Oahu in the northwest third of the state.
