The brick capitol was originally completed in 1792 using the designs of Jonathan Doane. It is located on Barrack Street at State Street. United States Highway 1 is 6 blocks east of the capitol. The Capitol is designed in American Renaissance style. The only supporting building is the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals Building in Trenton. The state was officially created as the 3rd state on December 18, 1787 from Native American lands and Province of New Jersey. Trenton has been the capital since 1784 with Perth Amboy and Elizabethton before that. The state’s name comes from the English island of Jersey. Trenton is named for landowner William Trent. Newark is named for Newark-on-Trent, England. High Point in Sussex County is the highest point and the lowest point is sea level at the Atlantic Ocean.
New Jersey government, in the Executive, consists of a Governor, a Lieutenant Governor, and 20 appointed Department Heads. There are 40 Senators and 80 Assembly Members in the Legislature. Seven Supreme Court Justices and Thirty-five Appellant Judges serve New Jersey in the Judicial. New Jersey is located in the east central part of the United States on the Atlantic Ocean. The geographic center is in Burlington County 4 miles southeast of Trenton. The state is surrounded clockwise by New York, the Atlantic Ocean, Delaware, and Pennsylvania.
The area is 8723 square miles. It is 47th largest state in the country. It is the 11th most populated state in the country. It has a density of 1064.9 persons per square mile making it 1st in the country. Its major rivers are the Delaware, the Wallkill, the Hackensack, the Passaic, the Raritan, and the Toms. Trenton is the central part of the state yet on the border with Pennsylvania. Newark is located in the northeastern of the state in the metro area of New York City.
