The white stucco brick capitol was originally completed in 1851. It has undergone numerous remodeling and expansions over the years both internally and externally. It is located on Bainbridge Street at Dexter Avenue. Interstate Highway 85 is 7 blocks south of the building. Barachias Holt provided the original designs in Greek Revival. The major supporting structure is the 1994 Supreme Court building. The state was officially created as the 22nd state on December 14, 1819 from Alabama Territory which came from the Mississippi Territory, West Florida, and Native American lands. The state’s name comes from the river named for the Native American word meaning “clearers of the thicket.” Montgomery is named for Revolutionary War General Richard Montgomery. Birmingham is named for the city in England. St. Stephens, Huntsville, Cahaba, and Tuscaloosa served as the capital until 1846 when Montgomery took over. Mount Cheaha in Clay County is the highest point and sea level on the Gulf coast is the lowest point.
Alabama government, in the Executive, consists of a Governor, a Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Auditor, Treasurer, Education Superintendent, and Secretary of Agriculture and Industries. There are 35 Senators and 105 Representatives in the Legislative. Nine Supreme Court Justices, Five Civil Appeals Judges, and Five Criminal Appeals Judges serve Alabama in the Judicial. Alabama is located in southeastern United States. The geographic center is in Chilton County 12 miles southwest of Clanton. The state is surrounded clockwise by Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and Mississippi.
The area is 52420 square miles. It is 30th largest state in the country. It is the 24th most populated state in the country. It has a density of 95.8 persons per square mile making it 25th in the country. Major rivers include the Tennessee, the Alabama, the Conecuh, the Chattahoochee, and the Cahaba. The capital is located in the southeastern quarter of the state. The largest city is in the northern fourth of the state.
